How Payoff Progress works
Payoff Progress helps explore when debt could be cleared — based on income, living costs, and interest rates. Enter figures, adjust scenarios, and see a month-by-month picture. Nothing here is set in stone; it is a starting point for planning.
1. Add income, costs, and debts
List each debt with its balance and APR, then add monthly income and regular outgoings. The calculator works out what is left after essentials — that surplus is what could go toward debt each month.
2. See how payments are applied
With more than one debt, payments go to the highest APR first. As each debt clears, that payment rolls into the next. The schedule shows how balances change over time.
3. Spot when the numbers do not add up
If the monthly surplus cannot cover interest, debt will grow rather than shrink. Payoff Progress flags this and suggests how much extra income or lower costs might be needed to turn things around.
Private by design
Financial data stays on this device by default and is saved in the browser — not sent to Payoff Progress servers. Optional folder sync can share plan files through cloud storage you choose.
Projections are estimates. Interest is applied monthly, and the model assumes the full surplus goes to debt each month. Real lenders, fees, and life changes can differ.

How folder sync works
When sync is enabled Payoff Progress saves sync data to a folder that you specify which should be within the structure of folders accessed by your cloud file sharing software of choice. This keeps you the user in total control of what is happening and you can use whatever cloud sync tool you wish (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc).
The sync folder
You can run Payoff Progress over multiple devices and as long as sync is enabled on each and they all point to the same folder that is being kept in sync by your cloud storage app you will find that the app keeps in sync.
When a folder is linked, the app writes small data files there. The cloud app on each device copies those files automatically — nothing is sent to Payoff Progress servers.
Folder access
When you first sync or re-open the browser and return to Payoff Progress you may find that the browser prompts you for access to the folder you chose to run the sync in.
Make sure you always accept any file write permission requests, which will only ever be for the same folder you originally picked for the sync to work within. Failure to do this will cause the sync to fail.
When data changes
Edits on this device are saved to the folder. Other devices check the folder every few seconds and pull in new changes. Use Sync now to update immediately.
Conflicts
Debt and scenario data is merged automatically. Settings and reminders are resolved without prompting.
About sync encryption
Sync encryption scrambles data files before they are written to the sync folder. Anyone with folder access sees encrypted text — only devices with the correct passphrase can read them.
How it works
Files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM using the browser Web Crypto API. A key is derived from the passphrase with PBKDF2 (120,000 iterations, SHA-256). Each file uses a unique encryption IV.
Passphrase
The passphrase is never stored on disk or sent anywhere. Enter the same passphrase on each device when linking or after closing the browser. During a session the derived key may be kept in memory so reloads do not ask again.
What is stored
A random salt and encrypted verifier are kept in browser storage; the salt is also written to the sync manifest. Sync folder files contain encrypted JSON — not plain text.
Limitations
Encryption protects folder contents from casual viewing. Use a strong passphrase. If the passphrase is lost, encrypted data cannot be recovered.
Connect other devices
Each device links to the same cloud folder. Use Chrome or Edge on every device — folder sync is not available in Safari or Firefox.
1. First device
Install the Dropbox or Google Drive app and create a dedicated folder (for example Payoff Progress). In this app open Folder sync, click Choose folder, and select that folder.
2. Other devices
On Chrome or Edge, sign into the same cloud account. Open Folder sync and choose the same folder — the path in Dropbox or Drive must match the first device.
3. After a browser restart
If folder access is blocked, click Allow folder access. Pick the existing linked folder — do not create a new one.
4. Encrypted sync
If encryption is enabled, enter the same passphrase on each device when prompted. The passphrase is not stored permanently — you may need it again after closing the browser.
